Poker Flat OHV Trail Sierra County
Poker Flat TownsiteTrail Overview
This trail runs Saddleback Road (CR 509) starting near canon point just west of Downieville on highway 49 and runs north for about 13 miles on well-maintained county roads except for the last two miles. The last two miles will require a high clearance 4 wheel drive vehicle as the road starts to drop into the canyon and may be very rough depending on spring runoff. There are some great views as you head into the canyon. You must return up the same road to return to highway 49 or climb up the other side on Poker Flat road toward La Porte. Tahoe National Forest Map by National Geographic Scenery is outstanding as you start to drop down into Poker Flat. The last two miles calls for low gear in 4 wheel drive.
There has been substantial mining in the area with active claims up and down Canyon creek.
A grizzly was used to separate rock from gravels before running through trommel or sluice. There are a couple of well supplied mining camps in the area.
There is an OHV campground near Canyon Creek with a couple of tables and fire rings. There are no other facilities or water anywhere in the area.
